Students with Medical Nutrition Needs - Policy and Procedures

A medical diagnosis requiring modifications in your daily diet can be challenging. Cortland Dining is committed to providing healthful dining to all of our students on the SUNY Cortland campus and will assist with these special dining needs upon request.

Our Registered Dietitian (RD) will orient students with specific medical nutrition needs to any special procedures and provide assistance with arrangements. The student is ultimately responsible for following the guidelines of their dietary prescription.

Once orientated, it is essential that a student communicate regularly with our
dining center managers and supervisors. It is appropriate to ask to read labels,
ask questions about preparation methods, and to ask for or specify modifications when special accommodations have been arranged. Always remind food servers of the specific allergies or special medical nutrition needs. The RD, unit managers and their supervisors are the resources to approach for specific food content information.

When seeking assistance for medical nutrition, a student must:

  • Provide a licensed medical provider’s prescription stating the diagnosis and diet order. This is to be given to the SUNY Cortland Registered Dietitian (RD) and will be kept confidentially on file while the student lives on campus. The student is responsible for keeping the information current.

  • Make an appointment with the SUNY Cortland Dining Services dietitian (RD). The RD will assist with orientation to current menu selections that conform to the prescribed diet and introduce the student to the Dining Service managers and personnel in dining facilities. The RD will determine if additional arrangements need to be made to accommodate a healthy diet according to the guidelines of the dietary prescription.

  • Maintain timely communication with RD and the dining managers who are assisting with any special accommodations. A contact information list is available.

  • Sign Permission for Release of Information and Confirmation of Receipt of Information forms.
 * If you choose not to use the special arrangements set up for you for three consecutive days without notice, those services may be suspended until you contact the RD or Dining Services manager. Please, communicate with us regularly,  so that we have the foods you need and desire, available for you.
